How summer is different than the rest of my life

Thinking-Out-Loud

My job is flying by, which means that summer is too. Despite sometimes hating it, I love my summer job. I feel like I’m living a dream.

1. Mondays & Tuesdays are my weekend. While everyone else is at work, I feel like I’m playing hooky.

2. We Share Wednesday. We spice up the workweek by bringing food and dressing up. This week’s theme was “fiesta,” we wore sombreros, and we brought salsa, chips, & tacos. Next week we’re thinking Mediterranean.

3. There’s also breakfast for dinner on Sunday. We’re planning to make pancakes with bananas, Nutella, & cookie butter.

4. Social events are aplenty. The co-workers and I got together for a fancy pants dinner at Habana. I’ve had the place bookmarked for 2 years so I went all out.

Appetizers to share: empanadas (get it!) and Spanish flatbread

Entree: shrimp & ahi ceviche followed by sharing paella

IMG_3260

Drinks: a pretty strong sangria, shared mojito, & a mango jalapeno margarita

5. Food is to be enjoyed not stressful. Surprisingly, I lose a few pounds over the course of the summer. There’s lots of walking to counteract the eating, but mostly, it’s the absence of stress over food.

My co-workers eat without talking about calories or guilt. I definitely experienced some food guilt after dinner at Zengo, where I went with a friend who made it a cheat meal, but not with the co-workers at Habana… they call it life.

I also realize I eat at work then won’t eat when I come home. I’m satisfied picking at the potluck food at work (salsas, guac, strawberries, & a mini beef taco today) that I don’t feel deprived.

Regular meals have gone out the window. While snacking throughout the day wouldn’t work for me normally, the abundance of healthy-ish and delicious food at works for me now because I don’t eat a lunch or dinner along with it.

Breakfast is the only thing I do make and eat. That breakfast consists of a green protein shake made with a scoop of Plant Fusion cookies & cream, 1/2 banana, 1 cup almond milk, and ice. Simple.

I have an obsession with flamingoes.

How is summer different from the rest of the year?

A Place I Live: Center Street Anaheim

I met Natalie from The Sunshine Grove at work. She and her husband are garden, beauty, and life hackers/DIYers. They did demos on container gardening, beauty from the kitchen, and jam cocktails!

Natalie lives a vintage, mid-century lifestyle and if I would only work harder, I would do my hair and dress like it too. One day…

She also lives near my area and her blog showcases her neighborhood through “A Place I Live.” I cannot wait to go to the Anaheim Coves for a walk or hit some buckets at Island Golf Center!

With that said, I decided to show you a bit of my new neighborhood. I live at the edge of 3 cities – cross a street and you’re somewhere else. That’s the suburbs for ya!

Anaheim is the home of Disneyland, just a few blocks away, but downtown Anaheim is being revived in a big way. The Packing District opened up earlier this summer – it’s an old orange packing house made into a fancy food court a la The Ferry Building.

Just one road down and across the street is Center Street Promenade.

The Yoga Mat is there. I’m obsessed – one of their instructors Louise is actually a friend of my co-worker/yogi friend! What a coincidence!

I’m obsessed with Ink & Bean for their simple menu and decor.

IMG_3193

I sat outdoors to read Sexy by Nature. There’s also a free library in an Airstream trailer!

IMG_3195

Next door is a fancy but pricey cheese shop.

IMG_3200

There’s a trio of men’s shops on the other side of Ink & Bean, including Barbeer – get your hair cut and a drink.

IMG_3201

But I mostly lounging around waiting for Home Eco:Nomics to open. The store is small but mighty.

IMG_3204

I ended up buying jewelry. Earrings and now rings?!  The ring says, “I promise to look on the bright side” from Whitney Howard Designs.

IMG_3211

Finally, I stopped by Healthy Junk, a vegan restaurant in their “Good Food” food court, for watermelon juice.

What a great way to start the day!

I even visited my family, cleaned my car, and am about to shower for the evening!

Treat Yourself Tuesday: For My Mind & Body

It was your Monday, but it was my Saturday.

I woke up at 6:30 to some rain that quickly subsided.

I laid around and made a list of to-dos.

First up, run errands and finally eat a homemade egg & cheese sammie and PopCorners. Oh my gosh, this is the best flavor!

IMG_3155

I had coupons for nail polish so I treated myself. 🙂
IMG_3154*I tried the Revlon one also, but I may need to trade out the color…

I love the $1.99 Sinful Shine Gel Tech in Royal Flush.

IMG_3161

It was so sweltering hot by the afternoon.

Baron found shade.

IMG_3157

…and I found my way to yoga. I treated myself to 20 days for $20. 🙂

IMG_3165

I’m currently obsessed with this area!

IMG_3164

I was super early so I stopped by Healthy Junk for an unsweetened hibiscus berry iced tea.

IMG_3166

The room is actually pretty small but intimate.

IMG_3177

The practice was sweaty and left me feeling strong and bendy. Mind you, I was sore from yesterday!

IMG_3167

I even killed it with wheel pose. I didn’t even need to warm up with bridge pose!

*Goal: to get one leg up!

I was starving by the time yoga was finished so I ate Trader Joe’s garden veggie lasagna with some chicken.

I also made Fitnessista’s PB&J amazeballs and made one with s’mores goodies that turned out really good!

IMG_3180

My attempt at watching “The Great Dictator,” recommended by our sound guy Eric the Entertainer, semi-failed because though it’s good, I couldn’t focus!

*Instead I watched “MasterChef.”

If I had a motto, this would be it.

My treats for today:

  • AM yoga
  • Grab some coffee
  • Stop by Home Eco:Nomics, which I’ve peeked into but haven’t had a chance to go into
  • Car wash
  • Dinner with co-workers 🙂

How are you treating yourself?
